WS Veterans Memorial Cemetery
• Bouten Construction Co. Spokane WA
This 120 acre cemetery features a covered, open-air structure for committal services, a visitor’s center, a computer system for locating specific graves or interments, and an assembly area for special occasions, such as Memorial Day observances. The State Veterans Cemetery provides for in-ground casket burial sites and cremation interments, columbarium niches, and a scattering garden for cremation interments. The design firm of JGM Landscape Architects Inc developed the cemetery design. Initially, the Washington Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) explored the possibility of requesting a National Cemetery in Eastern Washington, similar to the Tahoma National Cemetery in Western Washington. Because the veteran population was not sufficient to meet the federal requirements, WDVA began working toward establishing a State Veterans Cemetery. Bouten Construction Company was awarded the construction contract.
